How to lead from a distance in an effective and sustainable way

“Confidence has made an sensational entry into the world of work” is what had recently shared Benoît Sierre, HRD at L’Óreal France. On this, no one can contradict him, because that’s a direct consequence of the emergence of telework and the need to lead from a distance.

This way, to lead from a distance requires bigger points than traditional leadership, such as:

  • Be certain that the goals are clear, explicit and understood;
  • Make sure that the tasks to be taken are correctly prioritized and organized;
  • Go after knowing if your team’s framework is clear, explicit and understood.

So, how to really lead from a distance effectively?

A salesperson that doesn’t believe on his product, can’t have good results on a long term. Therefore, a manager that an unconscious resistance about remote management, will risk creating obstacles on his smooth implementation way.

The five points I develop on my interventions, derived from 5D method, demonstrate – through storytelling, role-playing, practical cases and powerful tools – how to:

  1. Strengthen determination and the needed agility to lead from a distance successfully;
  2. Reinforce (emotionally) the discipline, even if it’s from a distance;
  3. Truly believe in the possibility of leading from a distance effectively;
  4. Reinforce the culture of mutual aid;
  5. Learn how to trust and have confidence.

Confidence on management

Lastly, confidence and stress are two sides of the same coin. By acting on confidence management, we reinforce the quality of your remote management for an effective performance and a sustainable development.

The fear of remote management, frequently, comes from the manager itself, from his fear of not being succeeded, of being overwhelmed, of losing control or becoming useless.

This way, strengthening your confidences means allowing them to better delegating (ability to give your trust to others) and better leading (ability to create a trust climate on your teams, your partners and your manager).
